crafting community

Ampersand Design Studio

When an email landed in our inbox about this creative weekend for families, we couldn't wait to share! It's such a brilliant concept and if we lived any closer, we'd be all over this, so for those of you that might be able to be in Palm Springs in October, check this out! October 4 - 6, the Fourth Annual Crafting Community will return to the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs!! We've been dying to make it to the Ace Hotel anyway, so this seems like a pretty perfect excuse :)

Crafting Community is a unique chance for families to engage each other, and other like-minded families, in a positive environment filled with laughter, imagination and plain old fun. Karen Kimmel, the creator of CC, believes aesthetics and design are not lost on children. They love beautiful things and in fact, beauty helps engage. With that in mind, she works tirelessly to create workshops that will inspire guests of all ages.

Check out some celeb additions to this year's line-up:
- Renowned Silver Lake handbag designer Clare Vivier will join in the fun, teaching families to make chic, original leather accessories.
- Rene Holguin, the mastermind behind the cult West Hollywood boutique RTH, will return to reprise his popular Family Crest workshop.
- And Christine Schmidt of San Francisco's Yellow Owl Workshop, will teach families how to carve their own stamps so participants can create their own versions of Yellow Owl's bold, graphic designs.

The families will also be given a number of chances to connect with nature and play with an underwater photography workshop, custom age-specific workouts by Undefeated and Converse, as well as one-on-one skateboarding sessions with pro-skaters.  Relaxation is taken just as seriously as the weekend’s inspiring workshops and activities so after a long day of fun, s’mores are enjoyed under a blanket of desert stars and the late night dance party is presided over by DJ Muggs, formerly of Cypress Hill. I mean, seriously, we want to go kids or not!! ha!

And it's all thanks to these three ladies: from left to right: Tait Chatmon Alvarez, Stacy Bernstein and Karen Kimmel!

If you're up for it and as excited as we are about this, here's the link to reserve your spot: http://craftingcommunity.eventbrite.com/

getting crafty for father's day : DIY kites

Ampersand Design Studio

With Father's Day right around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time for a little craft that you could do with your kid! Bonus: it can be a gift for dads AND a fun little activity for Father's Day! So, grab a few supplies, and let's have some fun!

Materials: skewers, tape, string, tissue paper, glue stick, scissors, needle and ribbon for decoration

Step 1.  Layout your skewers in the size that you want for your kite

2.  Tie off the center stabilizers and tape the supporting skewers

3.  Cut out a piece of tissue paper the size of your kite with a 1-2 inch boarder

4.  Cut thick fringe on the edges and glue the tabs around the skewers. Continue this around all four edges.

5.  Place the glue side down on another piece of tissue and repeat steps 3 and 4. Adding more layers helps to strengthen your kite! The more you add the stronger it gets!

6.  Once you have finished your layering  (we liked 4 layers the best) you can use your needle and thread to poke through and around your stabilizer at the top (its best if you can thread it through the tape so it does not tear).  Tie this off and then do the same at the bottom. Keep some slack between the two ties, this is what you can hold onto to fly your kite.

7. Add a tail! This can be anything you want! We used ribbon, yarn and bows!

8.  Decorate! Paint and stickers work great!

9. Take it outside and give it a shot!

We hope you guys all give it a shot, we had the best time letting our little guys decorate these kites!

We know we have already introduced you on previous posts, but this brilliant idea is all thanks to our absolutely incredible intern, Jordan Key! Not only is she an awesome designer, but we have uncovered a craft genius! She's basically our very own in-house Martha Stewart and we are so lucky to have her! Thanks Jordan for coming up with this fun activity and for your daily brilliance!!!

Painted Bird Shoes

Ampersand Design Studio

Painted Bird Shoes first caught my (Morgan's) eye on the feet of one of my fashionable friends, Alison, who was in town visiting from California. I immediately needed to know where they were from so I could run home, get online and copy her cool Cali style! So, when Painted Bird asked Carrie & I  how we would wear their shoes, we were MORE than happy to romp around the city in our favorite new accessory! What's not to love?  They come in so many unique color combinations and they couldn't possibly be more comfortable. We're always looking for something casual, but cuter than flip-flops. You know, something chic enough for dresses and skirts, but casual enough for cut-offs and jeans. Painted Bird just solved everything on our checklist– they are so versatile! Each shoe is artisan crafted & hand crocheted. They are seriously beautiful. Plus, Painted Bird was designed and created by two brilliant women (it's worth reading their bio) needless to say, we are huge fans!

PS... did we happen to mention how cute the packaging is?  We just loved the surprise of getting shoes in a printed muslin bag. Just too perfect!

It just so happens, the entire identity was designed by the very friend we spoke of earlier, Alison! Speaking of insanely talented ladies, Alison is high on that list as well. Her studio out of sunny California, is called Fable Design. Make sure to check out Fable Design's portfolio, full of great color,  one-of-a-kind graphic design and surface patterns!

Aren't they gorgeous up close? You should really own a pair to see for yourself. Good luck picking your favorite color though, that's all we have to say! We couldn't even narrow down our choices to two for days! As you can see, Morgan went with the ankle strap and Carrie went without, but never fear, most colors are offered in both options. And if you're wondering, they stay on without the strap (we wondered, so thought you might be too). They've been tested by us, and that's a serious test including  running around after (very fast) toddler boys all day long!

One last thing we wanted to share with you all is  that a select few pairs of Painted Bird can be found at Anthropologie! Yep!! It appears some are currently sold out, but we found the Tidal Pool Ankle Wrap is still there!!!!

the color run

Ampersand Design Studio

I got the lucky opportunity to do The Color Run here in Kansas City on Saturday! My sister registered many months ago for herself and her husband, but then her husband had to work on Saturday. This was a major bummer for him, but when she asked me to take his place, I was thrilled. It was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. Everyone comes to the starting line with a white shirt and along the 5K course, there are stations set up at each kilometer where you get pelted with technicolor! At the finish line, there was also a stage with awesome music and more dumping of color. The clouds you see in the photos above are just the color powder filling the sky. It was a visual extravaganza, to be sure and I may have gone a little overboard with the photo-taking! AND..please check out the adorable t-shirts my sister MADE for us! She claims they're easy to do, but I'm not so sure. They were so cool just white but then, in the rainbow colors they got even better! If Color Run comes to your city, I would jump on it. In Kansas City, 28,000 people did the run between the two days (Saturday and Sunday). Locally, money was donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

on my mind: a day in the mountains

Ampersand Design Studio

As Morgan said, summer vacation and getting away from our hectic schedules is front of mind for both of us, and in my case it will be a reality before long. We aren't hitting the beach though; we're heading to the mountains. So, I thought I'd share my wishlist for the trip. The only thing that didn't make the cut here is a hiking backpack/ baby carrier. I'm not sure which one to get for toting around our guy on our (not-so-challenging) hikes. links: 1. Camp Pop-over in navy stripe  2. The Beach Boys: That's Why God Made the Radio  3.
